A small material input with a major economic impact.

Fluoropolymers support strategic European value chains. The Socio-Economic Assessment study shows that fluoropolymers contribute to more than €1.6 billion in economic output and 14,500 full-time jobs, with fluoropolymer-dependent activity supporting much larger downstream sectors.

For many critical applications, no alternatives are currently available

The Assessment of Alternatives study shows that fluoropolymers cannot currently be replaced in many applications without affecting performance, safety, or feasibility. Where possible alternatives exist, substitution may require long testing, qualification, and approval timelines.

A very small waste stream, effectively managed

The End of Life study shows fluoropolymers represent less than 0.01% of total EU waste by mass and can be managed through existing European waste treatment systems, including incineration.

Reducing emissions through concrete industry action

FPG’s Manufacturing Programme sets measurable emissions reduction commitments, supports technology exchange and promotes safe handling. All six participating companies met the first targets at the end of 2024, with more stringent targets for 2030.

Fluoropolymers

Fluoropolymers are advanced materials that provide unmatched durability, chemical resistance, and stability in extreme environments. Their distinctive combination of properties makes them essential across a wide range of applications.

Essential Uses and Benefits

Fluoropolymers are typically used in small parts and components, yet these minor material inputs have a major impact across Europe’s economy and value chains. Their unique properties enable safety, durability and performance in many critical applications, contributing to more than €1.6 billion in economic output and 14,500 full-time jobs across the fluoropolymer supply chain. For many critical applications, no suitable alternatives currently exist, meaning restrictions would affect not only fluoropolymer producers but also the many industries that rely on them.

Lifecycle

Fluoropolymers can be produced, used and managed responsibly across their lifecycle.

1. Manufacturing

FPG’s voluntary Manufacturing Programme sets measurable emissions reduction commitments. All six participating companies met the first targets at the end of 2024, with more stringent targets for 2030.

2. In-use

Finished fluoropolymer materials are stable and inert under normal conditions of use. FPG supports safe handling across the value chain.

3. End of life

Fluoropolymers containing waste represent less than 0.01% of total EU waste by mass and can be effectively managed through existing European waste treatment systems.

Fluoropolymers and the PFAS restriction

FPG calls for a full exemption for fluoropolymer manufacture and use from the proposed PFAS restriction under REACH

The industry’s voluntary Manufacturing Programme demonstrates that emissions concerns can be addressed through targeted, verifiable commitments, without restricting access to materials that are essential for Europe’s most critical industries.

Our position is further supported by three independent studies:

Assessment of Alternatives

No technically viable alternatives in many critical applications.

Socio-Economic Analysis

Major contribution to European value chains, jobs and competitiveness.
